The ship was built in 1868 at Walter Hood & Co shipyard in Aberdeen, for George Thompson. It measured 36.0 ft x 212.0 ft x 20.9 ft and weighed 948 tons net. It was built for the sailing trade routes that brought tea from China and was fitted with three masts. On its first voyage, having Robert Kimball as captain , Thermopylae covered the distance between Gravesand and Melbourne in a record period of 63 days.
